Shipping. The black sheep of fandom. I know most people think shippers are a bunch of crazy lunatics, what with antics like calling the rival girl nasty things and wanting her to die, turning the rival guy into a heartless spawn of evil in their fanfiction, and just their crazy irrationality about anything that states their shipping preference isn’t canon, but we are not all like that. I admit, I love shipping. It’s a lot of fun. I love looking for little tidbits in favour of my preferred pair. So it’s very frustrating when a vocal minority makes the rest of us look bad. Even though I like to argue for a pairing, I’m the first to admit that most of this is very shaky and requires a lot of assumptions, but that’s what makes it fun in the end. So I don’t want anyone to take this too seriously. This is just my idea of having a good time. :)
I was originally going to do Ichigo and Rukia (IchiRuki) from Bleach, but I do objectively think that pair has moved out of fanon and into canon. There is just too much symbolism and special moments between them to miss the author’s intention and to argue for such a canon pair isn’t much fun so I changed my debut pair to Zoro and Robin (ZoRobin) from One Piece (another favourite of mine). Yeah, I know this pair is going to be hard to argue for, but I think there is enough tidbits in the manga to make it worthwhile. And yes, I will be contrasting with Nami, but only when necessary to build a nice contrast to prove a point. Before I delve into my analysis though, I think it’s worthwhile to provide a general background for both characters.
(Spoiler Warning!)
Background: Roronoa Zoro
Zoro is the first person to join Luffy officially on his pirate crew and thus is sort of the second in command. At first he joins Luffy on whim and tells him outright that he will cut him down if he interferes with his dream of becoming the number 1 swordsman in the whole world. But this slowly changes and Zoro now believes that making Luffy the Pirate King is most important (he begs Mihawk to teach him swordmanship after the crew’s separation, the man whom he had vowed to defeat and become number 1 in the earliest parts of the manga). Zoro is best described as overconfident and arrogant; as well as almost blood thirsty. Out of all the Straw Hats, he is probably the one that loves to fight the most and along with Luffy and Sanji is described by Nami and Usopp as the three monsters. Nevertheless he has a more sensitive side that he tends to hide: he refuses to fight Tashigi and actively tries to avoid her because she reminded him of his old friend (and possible crush). He also wanted to become number 1 as a promise to said dead friend. He likes to party and after Robin, is the most level-headed of the crew. He uses three swords, although he can also use a single sword and double sword style moves too. Often his sword attacks/styles are named after demons and animals.
Background: Nico Robin
Robin is introduced as an antagonist and the right hand women of Crocodile. Seemingly emotionless and cruel, it is later revealed that Robin had to join criminal organization to avoid being captured and killed by the World Government from the age of eight. Often leaving said organizations when the World Government came for her or when they tried to hand her over. She joined Crocodile for a similar reason, but also to read the Polygraph in Alabastra. Robin’s dream is to discover the true history of the Void Century, which is said to be written on the Polygraphs. Unfortunately, most Polygraphs contain knowledge of ancient weapons, which is why she is wanted by the World Government (their official reason) and also the reason her hometown, family, and friends were destroyed and killed. Robin, realizing that the Alabasta Polygraph doesn’t contain the True History, decides she is tired of running away and wants to die in the falling ruins. Luffy, realizing Robin isn’t a bad person as she saved him twice (not to mention others), rescues her from the falling ruins against her will. Robin then demands he take responsibility as she has nowhere else to go and he accepts and thus she ends up joining the Straw Hats. Other than Sanji and Luffy, most of the crew is suspicious of her but all eventually come to see her as a true crew mate and friend. Robin is very knowledgeable on many topics owing to her background as a scholar and prodigy. As such, Robin is the one that tends to explain things to the other Straw Hats. She also has a morbid sense of humour and likes to matter-of-factly state rather morbid facts to the other crew members, much to their dismay. Out of the whole crew, Robin is the most level headed. She is never seen over-reacting or getting emotional and she likes to adventure. Shown to be a capable fighter on a number of occasions with her hana hana no mi, and by her own admission her specialty is assassination, which, given the nature of her powers, isn’t hard to believe. Her devil fruit powers are one of the most versatile: she can use them for combat, espionage, to support others, and defensively.
Robin and Zoro: Why I like them
I’m going to keep this short as my dissection of the manga will focus on this more in-dept, but basically I think the two of them get along best and have the best chemistry. They also look good together. ;) Oh and are my two favourite characters. xD
Analysis: Robin and Zoro in the Manga:
“I don’t trust you” ~ End of Alabasta Arc ~ Rough Beginnings, Subtle Inconsistencies
The first time they speak to each other, Zoro tells Robin he doesn’t trust her and that he’ll be watching if she tries anything. Robin just smiles. It’s not unusual that Zoro doesn’t trust Robin given that she was the right hand assassin of Corocodile, the man who tried to ruin Vivi’s country and kill the Straw Hats. What is unusual is that when the two are looking for a South Bird, not long after they reach the next island, Robin tells Zoro not to kill the insects and he listens to her. What’s odd about this is that Zoro rarely takes orders from anyone as it isn’t his style. He only listens to Luffy as he is the captain (and Nami when they are navigating).
Another interesting point here is that Zoro still tells her he doesn’t trust her and not to give him any suggestions, yet he does as she asks. Clearly, her opinion matters to him, whether or not he wants to admit it. ;) Also, before this scene the two have not really interacted much as Robin kept herself quite distant on Jaya (see below – she’s sitting “away” from the rest of the crew), so it’s definitely not a case of them becoming closer and like I said, Zoro still says he doesn’t trust her. So really, their relationship dynamic hasn’t changed, Robin is still the “outsider” and these early panels (above) show that perhaps the tough swordsman isn’t so oblivious to our cute Robin-chan as he would like her to think. ;)
“She’s a women” ~ Skypiea Arc ~ Strange Parallels
Skypiea Arc is probably the most shippy arc for them as their dynamic changes and there is an odd parallel that takes place between Zoro and Wiper (but more on that later).
The first thing to notice here is that Zoro actually listens to what Robin is saying and he actively engages in conversation with her. Prior to this, he was typically not interested and often was off snoozing somewhere (see below). These moments also give us a peek into their slowly changing dynamic. Not just Zoro, but the whole crew is slowly beginning to accept Robin as one of their own.
An early Zoro (before Ussop and Sanji joined the crew) snoozing.
Zoro sleeping not long after the crew enters Grand Line
Zoro falling asleep after Crocodile imprisons them
As you can see, it’s pretty easy for Zoro to just fall asleep and zone out of the affairs of the crew, yet once Robin is introduced, we never see him sleeping when she’s around. It can be said that he finds her stimulating. ;) Also worth noting is that Zoro has shown on at least one occasion to not really take what Nami says seriously (see below), yet he’s never done this to Robin. Clearly, out of his two female crew mates, he respects Robin a lot more.
This dynamic is also reflected in how much faith he has in each lady’s combat skills. In the case of Nami, Zoro does not believe she can protect herself and the moment he gets separated from her during a dual battle, he begins to worry about her safety:
In the case of Robin though, when he gets separated from her and Luffy, the thought that Robin would be defenceless alone does not cross his mind. He just thinks about getting to the meeting spot:
Now this may seem like it makes Nami more important to Zoro as he’s actively worrying about her, but the funny thing is, Zoro’s relationship to Nami and Robin strangely parallels Wiapa’s relationship to Aisha and Lucky. This strange parallel is quite telling given that Wiapa’s relationship to Aisha and Lucky is pretty clear cut. One is a little kid that he wants to protect and the other is someone he sees as a woman.
First parallel happens when Nami and Aisha accidentally ride into the battle field. Zoro and Wiapa quickly jump to their defence and ask them what the heck they are doing on the battlefield, as in both of their minds, these two are protection items that aren’t meant to be here. This parallel suggests that Nami is like a little sister to Zoro, one he feels obligated to protect. This isn’t strange if you consider that Zoro and Nami were Luffy’s first two crew mates and have been journeying together for quite some time now. In the case of Aisha, she’s a fellow Cyandian.
When Enel appears next to Lucky, Waipa desperately asks him not to do anything to her, so much so that he clutches the barbed wire and bleeds. Enel replies that to him that sex is not a factor when punishing those who oppose him. I’m not sure if there was something lost in translation or if Enel deduced that Waipa wanted Lucky spared because he saw her as a women, but either way, it’s pretty apparent that Lucky isn’t just a regular warrior to Waipa. This is the first we see him so desperate to save someone and I think it is a pretty clear connection to make that he is this desperate because Lucky is special to him. Hell, even Enel picks up on it.
Now the curious thing is, a few chapters later, Enel does the exact same thing to Robin and Zoro replies with the exact same sentiments as Wiapa. What’s more, he rushes to catch her as she is falling and places her gently on the ground before he proceeds to attack Enel. Now this is just one moment in a very long running manga, but it was this moment that sold me on the shipping actually having a chance (not that it means it will happen for sure). These three panels are quite telling for a number of reasons. First, Zoro and Robin aren’t yet that close. Last we heard on Jaya, he still didn’t trust her. Yet this scene tells a whole different story. He cares, because he catches her and proceeds to rush Enel. What’s unusual here though is that their relationship has transformed so quickly. Zoro didn’t really trust Nami until he learned her past, whereas it’s entirely reversed here. Zoro clearly already cares deeply for Robin. Deeply enough that he gets pissed off when Enel attacks her. The next unusual thing is that Zoro actively calls out against Enel for not discriminating based on sex. What’s weird about this is that Zoro has never really cared about sex in the past. When Kuina cries that she’s going to become weak when she grows up because she’s a girl, Zoro angrily replies that she is his rival and he won’t accept that (see below). Furthermore, when Tashigi accuses him of not taking her seriously because she is a woman, Zoro replies that her sex has nothing to do with it, it’s her resemblance to his dead friend (Kuina). This is further showcased when he engages both male and female bounty hunters on Whisky Peak without much discrimination. Clearly, sex isn’t really a factor for Zoro, yet here he objects to Enel’s attack on the basis of sex (“She’s a woman”). This suggests that while he normally doesn’t see females as women, she sees Robin as a woman. This interpretation is further supported by the parallel to Wiapa, who likewise sees Lucky as a women and pleads on the basis of her sex that Enel spare her. Furthermore, both men aren’t very expressive of these emotions. Lucky is terrified of Wiapa and probably doesn’t have a clue that he feels anything for her. In fact, outside of that moment, there was never anything that really suggested Wiapa loved her, which is very much like Zoro. These two clearly only let their true feelings show when their loved one is hurt. ;)
Robin’s Betrayal ~ Water 7/CP9 Arc ~ An Evil Face, the Demon Asura
After Skypiea, we clearly see that Zoro and Robin are no longer strangers. So when a certain stranger appears and starts talking about Robin betraying them, the Strawhat pirates are not pleased. While most of the crew actively show anger and frustration, Zoro remains quiet. Nonetheless, when it matters most, he shows what he really thinks.
That is, when Aoikiji begins his attack on Robin, Zoro is the first to move in and defend her. No hesitation. Clearly, in his mind, Robin isn’t a traitor and Aoikiji’s words have little effect on him. What’s more interesting is that when Aoikiji first begins talking to the Strawhats, Zoro is located the furthest away (see below), so he must have reacted right away when he saw Aoikiji make the ice sabre. Another interesting thing about this is that usually it is Sanji, the ladies man, that jumps, with no hesitation, at every opportunity to protect a lady. Yet here Zoro was the first to react.
When Robin does betray the group, just as Aoikiji warned, Zoro remains oddly calm about the situation, something that is quite unusual for the hot headed swordsman.
He mentions that he has no opinion on whether Robin really betrayed them or not in order to refrain from being taken by surprise if his beliefs turn out to be wrong, but I suspect that this is his way of cooping with the shock of her betrayal. In fact, later on, the manga strongly suggests that Zoro was very much affected by Robin’s betrayal. After her declaration and once he learns of her past, he meets up with Kaku again to fight for his key. The latter states that he was disappointed that he was unable to witness Zoro’s true strength in the Gally-La mansion and Zoro affirms this by saying he is a lot stronger than he was then (see below). Now given that Zoro has not been training since that incident as the crew went directly to Enies Lobby to rescue Robin, I think it’s pretty easily to deduce that Zoro is stronger now because all his inner turmoil about Robin betraying the group has disappeared. He and Robin are quite similar in the sense that they rarely let others see their true emotions, albeit Zoro is much more of a hot head and does let his anger show from time to time. Their similar disposition is one of the reasons I really like them together. One last thing to note about the scene below is that Kaku notes that Zoro’s spirit is giving off ominous beast like vibes. I wonder why? Could it be that he is really pissed off at CP9 and how they used Robin’s trauma against her? Or maybe after hearing how they abused his dear Robin, he’s eager for some vengeful blood? My, my the possibilities~
Which reminds me, after he hears Robin’s story, his face looks, according to Nami, “evil” (see below). My, my, now why would Zoro’s face be so disfigured by Robin’s past? Perhaps he’s really ticked off that these CP9 losers had the gall to mess with his Robin. ;)
And the thing is, this is the first time we see Zoro look so pissed off by the big bad playing with the feelings of a female crew mate. When Crocodile tormented Vivi by describing what he shall do to her country, Zoro looked angry (just like the other Strawhats), but nowhere near his expression above. Even Nami isn’t aware why he has such an evil face, because Zoro isn’t one to go around and proclaim his feelings, but they show when it matters and others take notice. ;)
The other interesting thing about Robin’s betrayal is how differently Zoro reacted to it when compared to Nami’s. Like I showed before, Zoro was oddly calm and rational when approaching the possibility that Robin betrayed them. When it came to Nami, however, he had no problem thinking of her as an enemy the moment she betrayed them:
Why is that? Well I think it’s because Zoro didn’t feel anything for Nami. Her betrayal didn’t hurt him in the way that Robin’s did and as such he had no qualms about potentially having to slit her throat. Robin, on the other hand, he was very much attracted to, so when the very real possibility arises that she betrayed them (especially troubling since Aoikiji warned them about it), Zoro puts up a calm facade and tries to think rationally as that is the only thing he feels he can do in the case where someone he truly cares for has betrayed him. Again, this is especially telling where Zoro, once he learns the truth, is able to wipe the floor with Kaku, whereas before he had trouble taking on Kaku (who was actually weaker then because he did not have his devil fruit powers). Even Kaku states as much!
What’s even more interesting is the new attack Zoro shows in his fight with Kaku, Asura. When Zoro does his Asura move, he appears to have 3 heads, and 6 arms. Why does this sound familiar? Oh wait, doesn’t Robin fight by reproducing her limbs? Quite a coincidence that Zoro’s new move seems to be inspired by Robin, isn’t it? Especially since he’s trying to rescue her and desperately at that if his face and spirit is anything to go by. ;)
And look which key just happens to unlock Robin’s handcuffs. Yes that’s right, Zoro’s! Quite a subtle nod there Oda, quite a subtle nod! I like it! This alone may look meaningless, but when considered with everything that has already transpired between them, it really feels like another subtle nod that these two go together.
Comrades in Arms ~ Thriller Bark & Sabody Arcs ~ More Robin and Zoro moments
Now after Skypiea and Water 7, the Zoro and Robin moments die down, but there is still a few to be had. Perhaps Oda didn’t want to introduce romance into his story, especially given that when asked who the Straw Hats loved, he answered adventure. If he had kept ZoRobin going so strong in the next few arcs, I think it would have moved from ambiguous and more and more into canon. So he definitely toned it down, but it’s still there from time to time.
When the crew first lands on Thriller Bark, after Usopp, Chopper, and Nami go missing in the scouting ship, something attacks robin. The page following that attack (above), we see both Sanji and Zoro next to her. Sanji being next to her is pretty normal given he never misses an opportunity to protect a lady, but Zoro? That’s is rather unusual for him, unless we look at this from the angle of her being special to him. ;)
One of the most interesting scenes between them is after Luffy tames Kerberos, a zombie with two dogs heads and a fox head, Robin teases the beast by saying it doesn’t look so good. Zoro replies with, “don’t pity him, you’re hurting his pride.” (the “Weeell” isn’t very Zoro-like and based on what Zoro says in the anime, I am guessing whoever translated this was a bit too liberal here). It is interesting that Zoro felt the need to go out of his way to tell Robin not pity a man because it will hurt his pride. Is he really talking about Kerberos here? That would be the surface/basic reading, but why would Zoro care about the pride of some random zombie dog? I don’t think he does. I believe when he says those lines, he is referring to himself. He would never want Robin to pity him and we all know Zoro’s pride is pretty damn important to him. Why did he feel the need to make this communication? because obviously he doesn’t want the woman he cares about to take pity on him. To someone like Zoro, it would be a pain worse than death. In Zoro’s mind, he wants Robin to see him at his very best. Furthermore, by even making this communication, he is stating that he feels Robin can understand him. That if he says “don’t pity him because you’re hurting his pride”, Robin will understand him enough to realize that it is something important to Zoro and will respect it. There is a sense of mutual understanding in this exchange. There is also a sense of esteem of Robin. In the case of Nami, there is a sense that she just doesn’t get “a man’s romance”. As she is always getting angry at the male crew mates for fooling around. Robin doesn’t do this and as such, Zoro feels she will be able to understand where he is coming from. This is reinforced in the later fight against Oars:
During the fight, Franky begins something he calls “Pirate Docking” where each member of the Straw Hats “docks” on Franky to form the Robot Warrior, Big Emperor. Robin refuses to join in saying it is an embarrassment as a human being to do that. Interestingly enough, Zoro promptly laments the fact that he even did it in the first place. In contrast, Sanji shows no such remorse. What’s going on here? Well, Zoro is mortified that he did something uncool in front of Robin. Like I said above, Zoro wants Robin to see him at his best. Unlike Sanji, whose affection is rather shallow, Zoro really cares deeply for Robin and the idea that he did something she called “an embarrassment as a human being” is mortifying to him.
There is also another subtle nod to the pairing, but not important enough to warrant showing another page, that happens before the fight with Oars. When Chopper and Robin get cornered by Zoro and Sanji’s zombies, Zoro’s zombie takes on Robin.
After the “pirate docking”, Zoro decides to start an offensive against Oars and who does he ask to help him? Robin, of course~ This is one of my favourite ZoRobin moments because it shows that Zoro respects her as his equal in a fight. He believes her able to handle herself in a fight, so he asks her to team up with him. It’s one of the many reasons I like them together. :)
Robin also saves Zoro when he falls, which is another nice nod to the pairing, especially since (if I recall correctly) she only saves Zoro and Nami this way during the whole fight. Since Zoro is the only dude saved by Robin that Oda felt like drawing, I can’t but help but feel like this is another subtle nod to the pairing. And this isn’t the only time either:
During the Sabody arc, right when Zoro was about to be killed by Kizaru, all the Straw Hats stand transfixed as Zoro is about to meet his doom. All except Robin, who tries to desperately rescue Zoro using her devil fruit powers. Alas, she fails and Kizaru just steps on Zoro to prevent her from dragging him off, but it is a nice way to show just how much Robin cares by having her be the one desperately trying to save Zoro from imminent death. Thankfully for the Straw Hats, Rayleigh shows up and occupies Kizaru. Another interesting parallel is that when Kuma is sending the Straw Hats off, Zoro is the first to go and Robin is the last (well if one doesn’t count Luffy and in this case I don’t because the idea was that Luffy was slowly losing his comrades, starting with Zoro and ending with Robin).
Finally, at the end of the Thriller Bark arc, Zoro decides he will sacrifice himself to save Luffy. He luckily survives, but refuses to tell the others what happened to him. It is mainly because he does not want Luffy (and the others) to feel guilty. The interesting thing is, 3 of the Straw Hats do learn about what he did: Brook, Sanji, and Robin. Brook sees it with his own eyes (or whatever he uses to see), Sanji hears about it from those two pirates above, and Robin eavesdrops on their conversation (quite literally at that. lol.) The interesting bit is that each of these serves a different purpose. Sanji has to know because he was there when it was happening, but Zoro knocked him out in order to sacrifice only himself to Kuma. For Brook, it serves as another incentive to join the crew (since he sees just how much the crew members care for one another) and to share a bond with one of the Straw Hats. But Robin, why did Oda want her to know? Oh I don’t know, maybe because it is important for Robin, as Zoro’s potential love interest, to know about the sort of sacrifice he made. Furthermore, the fact that Robin wanted to know enough to eavesdrop suggests she is highly interested in everything that has to do with Zoro, if you know what I mean. ;) She obviously couldn’t ask Zoro himself since he was so adamant about no one knowing (he wouldn’t even tell Sanji, who is his best friend and rival), so she did the next best thing. Clearly she cares a lot about Zoro if she is interested enough in what happened to him to eavesdrop.
The 2 Year Time Skip ~ Post-MarineFord ~ The Most Recent Zoro and Robin Moments
Now after the Sabody arc, the manga took a sort of detour and had 3 whole arcs dedicated to just Luffy. The last of these was the Marineford arc and at the end of this arc, Luffy decides to postpone the reunion for two years in order for him and everyone to get stronger and never face the same sort of defeat they were dealt at Sabody. Since this arc has just started running very recently, there aren’t too many Robin and Zoro moments, especially since they, unfortunately, didn’t get much screen time together during the Fishman Island arc, but there are still a few tidbits.
When the crew is travelling to Fishman Island, they happen upon some undersea volcanoes. To stop the lava from reaching them, Zoro decides to go out and cut it in half. But Robin stops him because the water pressure would crush him. Now it’s true he gets seemingly angry at her for trying to stop him, but in the very next page, he shows no resentment at all. He is in fact impressed with Usopp, so this was more a misunderstood outburst. Before Robin explains to him why she is stopping him, Zoro instinctively gets annoyed (especially since the lava is just about to reach them) and tells her to let him go. But what’s nice about this is that it once again is a subtle nod that Robin cares about Zoro’s well-being and that she is the one that can stop him from being reckless.
Now I don’t quite like what happens here for two reasons. One, Zoro takes away Robin’s opponent and two, this leaves Robin without any important opponents to take down. That said, it is rather interesting that Oda had Zoro come in and take Robin’s opponent. He could have had Zoro take on Hyouzou without going out of his way to have Robin there as well, but he drew it like this. Almost as if to give us another subtle nod for the pairing, especially since the imagery invokes the idea that Zoro is protecting Robin. Yes, I’m not really a fan of this sort of thing (and this is probably my least favourite moment between them), but it is a major shounen trope and as such, the shippiness of this scene doesn’t escape me (even if I would have rather it shown in a different way). That said, I did like that Zoro acknowledged Robin and gave her a reason for his interference. It toned down the scene a bit since it still told us that Zoro acknowledges Robin as a capable fighter. If he did not, there would be no reason for him to apologize to her for stealing her opponent. It also suggests that Zoro knows Robin won’t hold it against him.
The most recent shippy scene between them happens at the beginning of the current on going arc, Punk Hazard. Here Zoro and Robin are sitting in the back of Mini Merry and they happen to eat their lunch together. It’s such a cute moment. I can’t help but like it. :3 Note that Luffy has already finished his lunch and that Robin is sharing hers with him, so Luffy isn’t eating lunch together with them. It was just Zoro and Robin. Such a couple-like thing to do, eat lunch together, especially if you consider that one of them had to start eating and the other decided to join in. Ah, that is just too adorable. x3 I’m hoping for more of these sorts of scenes. ;)
A Special Bond Shared with Chopper
The other thing about Robin and Zoro is that they both get along extremely well with Chopper. In fact, it almost seems like Zoro is a surrogate father to Chopper and Robin a surrogate mother, which just brings about the most shippy of implications. Not that I mind. ;)
For example, at the end of the Alabasta arc, the Straw Hats are treated to the Alabastian Royal Baths. While the rest of the guys fool around, Zoro washes Chopper’s back. He looks like a dad washing his son’s back. Another interesting parallel is that during Skypeia, after Enel shocks Robin and we see that whole “she’s a woman” scene from Zoro. Zoro later finds Chopper cut down and unconscious and boy is he pissed. Maybe it’s just me, but I find it kind of interesting that the two closest crew mates to Zoro (well if one supposes that the shipping is correct) are both attacked in that arc. It feels like it reinforces the idea that Robin and Zoro are like surrogate parents to Chopper and that Zoro had a seriously bad day as his family was attacked, one after the other.
And look at this adorable scene between Chopper and Robin. Chopper, exhausted from using 3 rumble balls, lays on Robin’s legs. It’s another very symbolic image of a mother soothing her child. Oh and what’s this?! Zoro is saying, “I don’t want to hear that from you.” What could he mean? Bubble placement-wise, that should be a response to Chopper, but that doesn’t quite make sense since Chopper is asking if anyone else is hurt. I guess Zoro might mean he doesn’t want to hear someone saying they will perform operations when they themselves are so worn out. But Chopper does that anyway in the next page (with the help of Robin). Now as a reply to Sanji? Yeah, that makes perfect sense since Zoro finds Sanji’s womanizing ridiculous and often makes fun of him for it. And if that’s the case, my my, Zoro is annoyed that Sanji trying to lay down on Robin’s legs. What could this mean indeed! ;)
Robin/Zoro Moments in Chapter Covers
Moments between Robin and Zoro aren’t limited to just the manga, there are a few subtle nods in the chapter covers as well. Here are the chapter covers which I felt support the pair:
Nami and Robin don’t use weapons, yet in chapter 369’s cover, Oda has given Nami a pistol and Robin a sword. It’s a very interesting choice, since Zoro is the only other Straw Hat holding swords in this cover. Again, just the two of them are holding swords, which feels very much like a subtle nod that these two go together.
The cover for chapter 457. Note that Zoro and Franky are both missing from this picture. Isn’t it curious that of all the Straw Hats pictured, Robin is the only one with a katana. Curious indeed! It feels like a very subtle nod that the missing swordsman and Robin go together. I quite like it. :)
The cover for chapter 562. This is a cover of Robin, but look to the bottom right, a little duck that is holding a stick in its beak and one in it’s wing. What’s more, it looks to be very directionless and lost. My, who does that sound like. Isn’t there a hopelessly directionally impaired swordsman that also likes to hold his sword in his mouth? And it looks like this little duck reminds Robin of this certain swordsman and it brings a smile to her face. This is probably one of my favourite ZoRobin scenes. It’s just too cute and way too intentional to be coincidence, but subtle enough that Oda doesn’t need to worry about people thinking him getting into that “romance stuff”.
This is the cover of chapter 563. This is a Robin/Chopper cover since the birds are robins, but I think it belongs here because it reinforces that special relationship that Robin has with Chopper and that she shares with Zoro. Plus it is so cute~ Also interesting that it follows right after the previous cover, which was a big Robin/Zoro cover.
The cover for chapter 577. At first it looks like just a Chopper and Zoro cover, but look at Zoro’s shirt, there is a bird on it. Now, which member is most associated with birds? I think the answer is obvious. This is a very subtle nod and quite ingenious since if you weren’t playing attention, you wouldn’t have noticed what was on Zoro’s shirt! This also reinforces the special relationship both Zoro and Robin share with Chopper.
The cover of chapter 618. Robin and Zoro are next to each other on this cover and it appears almost as if she’s walking next to him biking. It’s not a very convincing cover by itself, but I think it lends itself well in addition to everything I’ve already shown.
Cover of chapter 622. Notice how Zoro is heading in Robin’s direction, while Sanji is heading in Nami’s? May just be coincidence, but it’s interesting that Oda drew it like this.
Cover of chapter 685. Notice that Robin is riding on a ghost that is wearing a top hat. It’s the only ghost with one. And oh look, Zoro is wearing a top hat too. And he is, in fact, the only one out of the Staw Hats with one on. I can’t see this as anything but a subtle nod. x3
And there you have it. My dissection of One Piece and why I believe ZoRobin has a chance of happening. I’ll admit, it’s pretty shaky but I think there are enough nods to fuel this shipping, at least for me. What do you guys think? Does it have a chance?

Zoro x Robin is nice. Sadly, Oda never planned to add any romance in One Piece. So the rest is leave to our imagination. The only one-sided romance is Boa Hancock to Luffy. I wonder if Oda like older woman x younger man *cough*
I’m waiting for another post like this.
23/12/2012 at 2:27 pm
True, he did say he wasn’t going to do romance, but it is always creeping in, even in the form of Boa’s one sided love (or prior to that Vivi and Kohza, and Wiapa and Lucky). The latter two weren’t explicit but the hints were all there. So who knows, maybe Oda will throw us a bone at the end. But yes, I’m not expecting much given he doesn’t seem too interested in pairing people off. Then again, it may be better that way because we can pair off who we wants. xD
I am planning on doing more shipping posts, but they take a long time to write, so it may be awhile. ^__^;;;;

Yes. Seeing older woman going after underaged boy is just…. how should I put it? Thank God, Luffy’s already 19 years old after time skip.
23/12/2012 at 5:10 pm
I don’t really see it like that since all the characters look about the same age. xD I know Robin is about 10 years Zoro’s senior, but personality-wise, they don’t feel that big of a difference (and well Zoro is physically mature since volume 1 so I don’t really see it as shota shipping). Luffy/Boa as well. (Although I personally don’t ship them. I don’t ship Luffy with anyone).
03/07/2015 at 12:30 pm
I love this post. I’m able to rest in peace. You’re amazing. THANK YOU. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SHIP. <3 <3 <3
23/12/2012 at 5:20 pm
I don’t mind age gap as long as:
1. They’re over 18 years old.
2. If one of them is below 18 years old, just hope it be the male.
3. If the female under 18 years, she must be mature (not loli) and personality wise.
P.S: I ship Luffy x meat . It’s canon already. Even Luffy cannot resist the tasty meat. They’re soulmate *wink*
23/12/2012 at 9:13 pm
I totally approve of that shipping! And yes, totally canon too. xD
24/12/2012 at 11:09 pm
I must confess that I don’t watch One Piece, but your analysis of how the comic demonstrates them coming together was brilliant. I doubt you missed a single instance with which to support your argument.
I’m expecting to hear of their marriage at some point in the future when the mangaka decides to end this popular comic.
24/12/2012 at 11:26 pm
Aw, you are making me blush. ^///////^ Thank you. Although I have to say, you must take some of this with a spoon of salt since I am putting a lot of interpretation into certain scenes. I don’t think it’s explicit enough to be 100% guaranteed, but I do feel there is enough in the manga to make a case for it. There are also some solid Franky/Robin scenes too (not as many as Zoro/Robin, I feel, but I think someone could make a solid case for that shipping too).
lol. I don’t think there will be a marriage (it would feel a bit out of place in the manga given the tone), but I do hope for some sort of conclusive gesture. Perhaps them sharing a hug or kiss. That would satisfy me. xD But the author has gone on record to say no romance in One Piece, so it may not even happen. :( Still hoping he changes his mind because my inner fangirl would love to see this ship become canon. :D
05/01/2013 at 1:13 am
I love this Zoro x Robin 4Ever. but Author yesterday i also checked some of Robin relationship with the another crew mates. and Franky is so obvious to be the 3rd person between Zoro x Robin. so, if you don’t mind, can’t you post something about this scanda of Zoro x Robin x Franky or another character who close with Zoro and Robin and the possibilities of being together ^^….
Z/R 4Ever
05/01/2013 at 5:23 pm
ZoRobin is my OTP in One Piece, so I don’t ship anyone else with Robin or with Zoro. Given how much work this post was (took me well over a year to find all the relevant pages from the manga and then to write this), I don’t really feel motivated to do it for a shipping I don’t care about, sorry. ^__^;;;; I am planning to do additional posts for whatever moments happen in the manga after this point, but they will only be ZoRobin moments. I’m also considering touching on the anime, but I’m still not 100% sure since that would take even longer than the manga. D:
I am planning on doing shipping posts for other manga with other pairings I like too. Natsu/Erza from Fairy Tail is a shipping a plan to do at some point. Might do a best 10 IchiRuki from Bleach moments too. I won’t do an actual shipping post for IchiRuki though because it’s too canon for me and thus not fun to write an actual analysis break down like I did here.(Same reason I won’t do a post for Erza/Jellal). And maybe IshiHime (Ishida x Orihime) eventually as well. But it will take me a while because these shipping posts are a lot of work. ^__^;;;;
06/01/2013 at 7:48 pm
I’ve just started reading One Piece yesterday (yep, yesterday) and I’m soooo loving it! I didn’t know that the story is that good; I should have paid more attention to your One Piece posts long ago! (If it wasn’t for my brother telling me of One Piece being aired at a local television channel — with its time slot after Detective Conan — my One Piece fandom wouldn’t have started).
Ah~ Zoro and Robin. The first time I paid attention to watching One Piece (that was only weeks ago; the crew were in The Islands of Bubbles) — Robin instantly became my favorite character. When I started reading the manga (and as I said, that was only yesterday :) ), Zoro became my favorite. I still haven’t reached the part in the manga when Robin will appear (I’m currently in Chapter 100) so I’m still pretty clueless with regards to the ZoRobin shipping, but we’ll see when I get there ^_^
Nice post about the shipping, now I’m starting to ship ZoRobin too; I’m excited to read those chapters! ^_^
06/01/2013 at 9:46 pm
No worries. I didn’t think One Piece would be good either. I sort of started it on whim and I’m happy I did now. xD
Yes, more converts to ZoRobin! xDDDD I’m curious what you will think of them. I would say Skypeia was the moment I started to ship them. The anime makes the moments even more shippy too! The way they animated that particular moment on Skypeia, it was just too perfect. xD And the fight was Kaku during Enies Lobby, oh boy, they added dialogue that made the moment even shipper! I’d say the animators ship ZoRobin too! XDDDD
03/07/2015 at 12:32 pm
I love it. Thank-you

hi sise wat qbout this
12/01/2013 at 6:07 pm
I was thinking about including that but it didn’t feel substantial enough. Still it is a very nice nod. :3 Maybe I’ll mention it when I do my next mini-part for ZoRobin. :)

In Vol. 61 of Usopp Gallery Pirates, Oda commented on a drawing of Rayleigh and Shakuyaku, calling them a “cute married couple”. However, whether they are truly married (or even in a romantic relationship) remains to be officially confirmed.
in the end of page
http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Silvers_Rayleigh
14/01/2013 at 3:00 pm
Oh yeah, I remember that. I don’t think they are officially married (or ever will be given that pirates are outlaws and having a legally sanctioned marriage seems out of character for them), but I could see them as a couple. I don’t think this is official since Shanky mentions Ray having “girlfriends” or something to that effect.

Hey just found out this blog today, LoL its a month of Love, reading something like this is really interesting. Looking forward for the next update.
02/02/2013 at 3:28 pm
Thank you. I’m happy to hear people actually like this post. This was entirely done to satisfy myself (crazy shipper that I am), so seeing that others like them together too and liked my dissection makes me happy. :)
04/02/2013 at 9:29 am
No prob, I liked it since oda would never add romance and your point of view is acceptable.
Ah and id like to add oda’s omake too for more shipping in this article.:
http://supernanny191.deviantart.com/art/Marchen-Time-a-new-OP-omake-85534647 (obviously the credit goes for the uploader, not mine)
and this is the fan art that just like oda’s work tribute for those omake
http://one-piece.livejournal.com/1079518.html (dont be confused its fanart but I liked very much and very worth mentioned)
05/02/2013 at 2:24 pm
Oh thanks for sharing those! I’ll definitely be including the omake in my next update and I like the fan art a lot as well. So cute. Man, Oda is trolling us, I bet he ships ZoRobin too. xD
13/02/2013 at 12:12 pm
deshou ne? they really make quite a pair…and they have a lot of moments minuscule but still theirs..it’s interesting to also note their sleeping habits…Zoro ALWAYS naps while Robin almost never sleeps…a book on one hand and a cup of coffee on the other…
14/02/2013 at 4:14 pm
Yeah, that is really interesting. I didn’t notice that before, but that’s an interesting duality between them. =)

i thing goode of the zombie how have the shadow of zoro take care of robin
12/03/2013 at 3:05 pm
Yup~ I mentioned that but I didn’t provide a picture because I didn’t think it was as important as the other parts in the manga. x3
02/04/2013 at 1:03 pm
just whay u never use the anime ther r many zoro robin in the anime
than in the manga
04/04/2013 at 5:53 pm
For two reasons: first, it’s a lot more work to go through the anime than the manga and find relevant clips. I can quickly flip through the manga but the anime requires me to go episode by episode and would have been much more time consuming. ;__; Second, manga is canon, so if I want to make the strongest case for the shipping, I need to stick with what Oda wrote and ignore additional things the anime staff added. I have been thinking of touching on the anime, but if I do, it won’t be as in-dept as with the manga because it’s just too much work. D:
31/05/2013 at 3:02 pm
I totally agree. This is why while shipping ZoRobin, I pay close attention to the manga because it is canon. :D
09/04/2013 at 10:04 pm
Damn you are crazy! I searched everywhere for a proper report about ZoroXRobin, but everything was lame. Your was awesome, because you actually referred to the real series, and you did not put in pictures that others had drawn. ZoroXRobin is my favorite pairing in One Piece, and I had a bad feeling that people would like Franky better than Zoro, but it seems that Zoro is better after all ;) (Never doubted him actually)
Thank you for uploading! :D
11/04/2013 at 10:10 pm
I know. I welcome the insanity of shipping! XD This post was actually written because I couldn’t find a good deconstruction of the shipping in the manga. I used to find so many for IchiRuki in Bleach, but none for ZoRobin, so I thought, I’ll do it myself! xD
Yeah, there is some ship tease for Franky too, but looking around the internet (on English and Japanese sites), ZoRobin does seem to be more popular. No idea if that will have any effect on what Oda does, but it can’t hurt. :3 And personally, I feel like Zoro fits Robin better. Franky is too childish and flamboyant. Plus post-time skip he looks more machine than human now. ;w;
Thank you for your kind words. I’m really happy others liked what I did here. :)
18/04/2013 at 2:02 pm
Hi, I’m a crazy fan of ZoRobin too!!! I’ve seen your post about ZoRobin months ago, and I love it sooo much, especially that you associated the way Waipa views Aisha and Lucky with the relationship between Zoro & Robin, Zoro & Nami, distinctively, which is a totally brand new idea about ZoRobin for me, and it’s really convincing. It’s awesome!! :)
This is definitely one of the best ZoRobin analysis I’ve ever seen. Well I do want to share your post and ideas with other fans shipping ZoRobin in the fan club I join. Would you mind me translate your article (or part of your article) into Chinese? (My friends and I are from China :D ) I will include the author’s name and attach your website link. And I will try my best to make the rendering as good as the origin one (your writing :3).
Thank you sooo much!! For your reading and your fantastic analysis, which brought me lots of joy :)
18/04/2013 at 10:09 pm
Might be because I’ve been shipping since forever. Started back when I was 8 or so. XD I used to ship Arnold/Helga from Hey Arnold and then Ash/Misty when Pokemon started airing. It’s so entrenched in me now that I automatically notice these things, even for ships I care nothing about. XD
I’m honoured that you liked my analysis enough to want to translate it for your club. :) You have my blessing. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as you did. :)
I’m so happy there are so many ZoRobin shippers. They are one of my favourite pairs too. I love them so much. >w<

what you do robin to zoro withe your hand like chopper + also like sanji want zoro get away from robin
01/05/2013 at 2:27 pm
hey thanks! i was looking for that pic! <3333333
you know, this is the best of "zoro x robin " clue from oda i think!
why? because:
1. you can see robin made a horn like a chopper on ZORO'S HEAD.
2. please look carefully to zoro's left hand end up to ROBIN,
3. also "the mysterious leg" behind robin's body. is that ZORO'S LEG? <3
4. sanji looks like he "pull" zoro just because he want zoro get away from robin. (cos since when sanji want to show up his "frienship" with zoro for that clear? it must because of something he did that thing. hha) and zoro looks very annoyed also. LOL
and if we combine every pieces of that point, it's look like a few second before that pics been draw, zoro was hug robin from back, and robin made a horn on zoro's head to look like chopper, because chopper is bellow her, so they can look like be happy family's photo. but then sanji realise it and rushed pull zoro away from robin (since sanji is woman lover) and chopper shocked because the position are changed. and how about robin? well it doesn't much affected to her, robin still cool as always. lol
am i too far? LOL
01/05/2013 at 11:04 pm
No it’s a great idea! x3 I’m pretty sure that is Zoro’s leg too since that’s his shoe and he’s being pulled by Sanji and as a result has toppled over because everyone was sitting down for the picture. We won’t know if they were hugging, but he was definitely sitting beside Robin! And that’s ship tease if I ever saw it! But it’s totally fun to think of them as hugging or Zoro putting his arm around Robin. ;D Plus it makes more sense too since it would explain why Sanji went out of his way to pull Zoro close to him. XD I don’t think Chopper is shocked for that reason though. He’s sitting with Nami after all, so there was no “family picture” going on. I think he’s either shocked Nami is hugging him or he’s noticed Zoro’s “horns” and is shocked. XD I personally think it’s the latter given Chopper’s personality. XD But overall, it’s a great scenario. :3
04/05/2013 at 8:32 am
hha glad you agree about it! yeaa for chopper you right, chopper always like that. i was wrong to described his reaction hhe.^^;
but hopefully we are right about zoro and robin, because even i desribed that picture without tried to shipped zoro and robin, the result still same, zoro was standing/sitting behind/beside robin (though we dont know if zoro putting his arm around robin or not. lol). because if it’s not, then why his leg could be there??
anyway, i totally agree for zoro x robin, since the 1st time i saw them i was like, “wow, i wonder why this couple had a big chemistry everytime they’re together?” lol totally loved them!
but sometimes, those same feeling came when i see zoro n tashigi met. and i dont like it. i’m zoRobin. but that feeling still came. sometimes bigger than when i see zoro and robin. looks like zoro also had special feeling to tashigi. -,-”
for example, these:

i never see zoro care to woman that much… T-T
it’s hurts..!T-T so annoying but oda draws this part with a big chemistry between them, can’t help it T-T
i want to know from you too about zoro and tashigi. do you feel same way like me?

18/05/2013 at 6:22 pm
Actually I’d say the recent chapter where he interacts with Tashigi confirm that he’s over his old crush on Kuina. Back in Logue Town, he couldn’t even talk to her without getting uncomfortable/embarrassed. Perhaps my shipping glasses are on too tight, but I felt the recent chapters were more Oda letting us know that Zoro is long over Tashigi/Kuina. The fact that he doesn’t respect her abilities at all only makes it plainer to me. He apologizes to Robin for stealing her opponent on Fishman Island, but to Tashigi, he berates her. I don’t know. I just don’t see that as romantic at all. And the carrying. It was more slap-stick than romantic. He was carrying her like a sack of potatoes and Tashigi was getting all flustered over nothing. I don’t discount that this could very well be the start of something between Tashigi/Zoro, but just as of now, I don’t think it’s anything particularly big.
01/05/2013 at 10:52 pm
haha, omg that is so cute. >w< I'm totally saving this picture on my hard drive~ :D
Yeah, this picture fits with this analysis really well, I think. ;) Man, Oda isn't fooling anyone, he like ZoRobin too! XD
23/04/2013 at 11:47 am
Hey : ) i cant believe that someone made so much effort into this but i can only say AWESOME!!!!!!! Since One Piece was Broadcasted here in Germany for the very first time i watched every episode and Manga( still remaining.)
And I think Zoro / Robin really match together for some reason. Even my sister who arent watching One Piece continuous asked me if Robin / Zoro are a couple X_X !!
Thanks for making my inner Fanboy soo happy by reading your analysis its wonderful.
——————————–
Nevertheless i have some questions you might hopefully be able to answer me.
First a lot of people say that oda clearly said there will be no Romance in One Piece. I was looking for it but i only found one interview where he said the Mugiwaras are in love with adventure.
Well technically he didnt say yes/or/no.(IMO) Moreover how do we define Romance in this case? Seeing them hooking up / kissing / showing feelings for each other?(Romantic interactions between the story) Or just maybe having them together at the very end of One Piece?
In Addition i know Oda is a huge fan of Dragonball.
He is worshipping Akira Toriyama and even said in one interview that he is ”God” regarding to Manga.(He had a big influence on Oda in every aspect)
And Dragonball fans know for sure what happened at the end.
We got couples like Son-Goku/Chichi – Vegeta/Bulma etc.
We didnt see much romance between them but at least there came together^^. So it wouldnt be surprising if Oda goes the same way as his mentor by pairing them at the end of the story. maybe?
What do you think ? : P
btw my fav. pairings Zoro/Robin Luffy/Boa Sanji/Nami Franky/Baby 5? haha
02/05/2013 at 12:02 am
What can I say? I’m crazy! XD But I’m seriously happy everyone likes my analysis this much. :3
Yeah, that’s the interview where the “no romance” thing has come from. And you’re right, he didn’t outright say yes or no, but more avoided the question. Which I always thought curious, but it could just be a case of Oda trying to cover all possibilities by leaving his answer vague yet still firmly letting fans know the point of OP isn’t romance. That said, One Piece already does have elements of romance in its plot. They just aren’t so in your face like most other stories, and require the reader to connect the dots, so to speak. Vivi and Kohza, for example. It’s not overt and someone can make the claim that they are “just friends”, but given how they feel about the each other, I think it’s pretty obvious they love each other (like how Vivi was the only one that could stop Kohza from continuing with the rebellion). Then there are the one sided crushes Boa and Shirahoshi have on Luffy. As such, I get the feeling that while Oda doesn’t want romance to be the focus of OP (and I can see why given how the story is unfolding), he isn’t against sprinkles of romance here and there. So yeah, I do think there is a chance we will see some official canon pairs eventually.
Romance, in my opinion, is any scenes/dialogue that depict a sexual relationship (i.e. two characters that love each other) or express the feelings of one character for such a relationship (i.e. a character in love). Note that “sexual” doesn’t mean there has to be kissing, hugging, or anything physical, just that it’s not platonic. In other words, it’s not a relationship between friends, but a relationship between lovers. In fact, I get kind of annoyed by people who think all romantic relationships must be physical, or else it is platonic. I think Ichi/Ruki is a great example of romance that isn’t physical. Likewise, most shoujo romances start out without anything physical, so the mere physical acts of love are not the defining trait of such a relationship. It’s the emotions themselves. We don’t see many nonphysical romances, but that’s because I think it is lot harder for a writer to pull of an interesting romance without the physical aspect. You have to really make the emotions themselves so intense and poignant that readers get the feelings and cherish them.
Yeah, I think it’s possible that Oda may take a page out of Toriyama’s books and give us pairs at the end without much build up. Personally though, I think Oda’s One Piece has long surpassed Toriyama’s Dragon Ball. This is just my opinion, but DB didn’t really do anything as remotely interesting as OP. OP has a lot of interesting topics like racism, law/justice versus morality, censorship as a means of control, etc. And has a more varied and interesting cast and world. I also think the twists are better set up in OP than in DB. But well opinions!
Honestly, I don’t ship anyone else in OP. No other pairs have really stood out, just ZoRobin. I do like Vivi/Kohza though, but I think those two are canon. :3
Hope my long winded reply answered some of your questions! u__u
03/05/2013 at 12:36 pm
yea of course thx a lot^^.
btw after Zoro’s ” emotional explosion ” the whole Robin – She is a woman thing i thought he does care about her but when the mugiwaras planned to leave Sky Island and Robin was missing he said they should let Robin at the island. Oo
Why is that? For some reason he is doesnt care at that moment.
04/05/2013 at 8:59 am
i think it’s because zoro is stil zoro afterall.
though he has special feeling to someone, doesn’t means he will turn to be sweet person all the time and show to everyone that how much he cares about her. he is not sanji. however, he’ll pretend to act like dont care or something. like zoro as usual. but his true feelings will show up when something happen to person who he care about.(like soaringwings says before)^^
reason number two: maybe zoro itself doesn’t realize about his feeling to robin. hhehe
07/05/2013 at 2:07 pm
y i guess that makes sense @ Cein T.
18/05/2013 at 6:33 pm
Yeah, I agree with Cein T. Zoro isn’t something who is going to start showing off his feelings. And, this just may be me, perhaps he was trying to combat those feelings in himself. Denying them by asserting he doesn’t need her and to leave her behind before they get worse.

18/05/2013 at 6:42 pm
i thgin zoro never like robin in this point of the tripe
zorr like and trust robin after water 7 and enise lobine before that i thing he didnt care of her
02/05/2013 at 11:42 am
for me i love one piece Because of the absence of any romantic action
+++++++++++++
i remember something Said Inagaki Riichiro of eyeshilde 21
about romance
http://www.imagebam.com/image/f10b92252149027
it really cooooole what he said About love
“the relashion ship between a man and women is not so simpleas to whether or not they re going out . ther and passion and bonds. ther r ego a lot of things that cant be understood by other . there even a lot of things that they themselves don’t understand”
++++++++++++++++
So i think zoro and robin theye don’t understand they Loved each .
They respect each other. Trust each other. Even like each
But like oda sai ixhe ather love his dream
I think oda in the end of manga or the last years
That there r love between zoro robin
Or may that zoro kite or have a bade thing oda will give as a hot emotion of robin like thirile park
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
In the end oda really good in little romance
++++++++++++++
Sis you can call me jlassi or brother
28/05/2013 at 9:20 pm
Yeah, it’s true there is more to a good romance than characters hooking up. I actually prefer a more subtle approach to romance than an all out declaration of feelings (although not to say I don’t like those from time to time as well). Thinking about it, most of the romances I like were ones were it wasn’t explicitly stated, but it was conveyed through subtle things the characters did or didn’t do. So I agree with you all the way~ :)
10/05/2013 at 10:58 pm
I LOVE THIS! Your analysis is by far the best one I saw :) You’ve stated all the thoughts I have between Zoro and Robin that I couldn’t transform into proper words.
About the fight between Zoro and Hyozou, didn’t Zoro just protected Robin because she was gonna be attacked and she wasn’t looking? I mean she wasn’t technically fighting Hyozou and even if they did, I think Robin wouldn’t do well because he’s an octopus and doesn’t have bones so she wouldn’t be able to snap his bones. Plus, he uses sword and Robin’s defense isn’t that good (I’m not so sure but I think if one of her phantom hands get hurt, her real hands would be hurt as well). So I think that it’s a good call Zoro saved her.
Also, I think this focuses, like 60%, on Zoro’s side. I wish I’d see more about Robin’s :) (maybe like a mini article or something? not necessarily you, anyone can write it, I’d love to see it!)
Lastly, I have a headcanon that since they’re “in love with adventure” the farthest that Zoro and Robin’s relationship can canonically go is with the same relationship Rayleigh and Shakky has.
P.S. This is really awesome and really well done :> hope to see more analysis from you! :D
10/05/2013 at 11:05 pm
Oh gosh, wait. I forgot Hyozou’s a fishMAN. He’s not 100% octopus. Oh well. Another thing, I agree with you that Robin should should have had an opponent (did that make sense?) so we could see her wicked powers.
If she had conqueror’s haki, she’d be unstoppable.
28/05/2013 at 9:30 pm
Thank you for your kind words. :)
Yes, you are correct. If Robin’s hana hana no mi limbs are hurt, she will feel the pain. It’s one of her weaknesses. Still given the hints we’ve seen of her new powers, I think she could have taken Hyozou. She seems to have acquired something close to Luffy’s 3rd Gear (Giant Limbs), so her offensive power should be pretty good now. But Zoro didn’t actually save her, the image does invoke that (which is why it looks so shippy), but the actual dialogue tells you that Zoro went after Hyozou because he was the swordman and Zoro wanted the practice. He doesn’t think Robin can’t protect herself, which is one of the things I like about the pairing. :3
Ah, the reason there is so much focus on Zoro is because there wasn’t much on Robin I could find. ;w; I chalk it up to two things: (1) Robin is a very guarded individual, she rarely lets her emotions show; (2) It’s a shounen manga, which I find tend to focus on more the guy’s side of the story than girls. Just like with shoujo, you usually get more information about the heroine’s feelings than her love interest.
Aw, I hope it doesn’t become a Ray/Shakky kind of thing because I kind of want a bit more. ;w; I mean, we don’t even know if those two are in any sort of relationship since Shakky mentions Ray has girlfriends. D:
17/05/2013 at 6:34 pm
i absolutely love this!!! i just started reading OP and i love the ZoRobin pairing! they just are so awesome together! (my fav characters 2 ^^)
Plus I like the way u presented the facts (and proof from the manga) here!
I was kind of depressed over the fact in a recent chapter (691 i think) Zoro has been helping Tashigi, going as far as carrying her to help her run away from poison gas!!
But this post kind of convinced me of ZoRobin… Loved it!
18/05/2013 at 6:38 pm
yes but also do the some thing to nami in arabasta
19/05/2013 at 1:37 pm
I quite agree with u here. But let’s not forget Tashigi reminds Zoro of Kuina. However, I think that Zoro does not respect any other girl in the manga the way he respects Robin (her opinion, strength and fighting capacity). Coming back to Tashigi, the way she hysterically talks to Zoro also reminds me of Nami in her anger mode and makes me think that can only anger/tire Zoro :D and I hope nothing ever happens between those two.
Forever a ZoRobin fan!! :D

28/05/2013 at 9:35 pm
I actually think these recent Tashigi/Zoro moments make it pretty obvious that Zoro is over his crush on Kuina. He couldn’t even look at Tashigi before, but now he has no problem. I might be looking at this from a different perspective because of shipping reasons, but this felt more like Oda clearing up for us that Zoro doesn’t see Tashigi like that. And the way he berates her and carries her isn’t romantic at all IMO. But again, opinions~
24/06/2013 at 8:01 pm
So I am French, I do my best to write properly in English … xD
Well I think your very coherent and logical article, you raised that we did not even notice, such as: relationship Nami, Zoro and Robin compared to that of Lucky, Wiper and Aissa. And I congratulate you, really! ^ – ^
Myself that “support” and “love” the couple Zorobin I took the treats to read your post and you also have me put a lot of hope! Personally, I think a relationship between the swordsman and the archaeologist will be possible.
I guess Oda will show no love or romantic relationship, and Zoro did not have a relationship like that. In short, I think Robin is the perfect person for our swordsman Zoro needs a woman-take care of itself, which does not disturb the dream of Zoro and for me this woman is is Robin . And as for Robin, I think she will agree well with Zoro and its delicate moments, Zoro will be fast enough to save her.
I would still tell a lot about them but it is time that I conclude my message: THANK YOU FOR YOUR POST, IT WAS A PLEASURE TO READ THIS ARTICLE ON OUR HUGE TOURTERAUX THEM!! ; D

I forgot to add something! :O
These two go together mentally and physically ;)
02/11/2013 at 4:30 am
They do, and it’s a big part of why I like the ship so much. I think they would make a good couple. Zoro would follow Robin around on her excavations and sleep and Robin would happily help him find his way around if he needed to go somewhere. XD
26/06/2013 at 4:18 pm
in the last chapiter i really hate law really
he really get along withe robin
14/07/2015 at 4:45 pm
I don’t know if anyone does this, but I browse pixiv for fanart to look at and Robin/Law is strangely popular even before the Dressrosa stuff. I don’t get it, but hey, ZoRobin has tons more art than any other ship for her, so I’m fine~

10/07/2013 at 9:43 am
most of the shounen mangakaa was a man….so it’s very likely that they have no interest to put a romance certainty in their comic/manga..
or maybe they just want to make us (who has a different taste in shipping couple) fighting to each other..or we can say he wants to troll us XD
let me say Naruto as an example…
first Narutox Hinata. Hinata was really showing her “Love gesture” to Naruto.. and it’s very clear that she like naruto….
but in the other side.. I think naruto like Sakura as well as she like hinata..I don’t really sure about it… XD
also Fairy tail (NatsuxLucy or NatsuxLisanna) and Bleach (Ichigox Rukia or Ichigoxorihime)..
all of them are just a complicated things….
lets hope that someday there will be a shounen Comic or Manga which created by a woman who has a better “romane sense” than a boy….XD
btw, nice article….can’t wait to see more…..^^
12/07/2013 at 12:10 pm
i thing the some problem withe the girle like reborne
02/11/2013 at 4:49 am
Personally, I think most mangaka are very obvious in who they want to make canon. One Piece is actually one of the few rare manga where Oda doesn’t drop a lot of hints and the ones he does are very subtle or vague. For Fairy Tail, I think Natsu/Lucy is the canon pair just based on how much those two are always together and Natsu seeing Lucy naked a lot and a lot of covers featuring those two. I don’t really care for the pairing as I ship Natsu/Erza, but from an objective stand point, I think it’s pretty obvious that Mashima wants Natsu/Lucy to be canon. Most of the Natsu/Lisanna ship tease also comes from the anime. Same for Bleach, I think IchiRuki is going to be the canon pair just based on how much the focus is on Rukia and how Ichigo reacts to her so much more intensely than Orihime. Can’t comment on Naruto as I am very behind in reading it. ^__^;;
03/11/2013 at 12:17 pm
Well, FMA is written by a woman and I do think she did good with Ed and Winry :)
23/07/2013 at 6:54 pm
The only thing I feel like stating because of all the confusion with Tashigi is that Zoro did not quite respect her at the same level as that he does with either Kuina or Robin. He knows that the two of them are strong and capable of fighting for themselves. But in Tashigis matter he thinks that she is weak…needs to be protected
06/02/2014 at 12:35 am
Exactly! It’s plainly obvious he looks down on Tashigi in the last chapters that featured them. And this may be just my biased opinion, but that looked to me more like Oda closing any possibility of them as a couple than it being ship tease. But either way, until anything becomes canon for either character, we won’t know for sure.
23/07/2013 at 8:05 pm
you didn’t mention how when kaku mentions robin as being worthless compared to justice, Zoro lets kaku know he said too much after intimidating him with a show of his “spirit”. At least in the anime, which i feel like is worth mentioning
27/07/2013 at 5:28 am
That’s because this is a manga only analysis. I wanted to stick to the source material since I am not sure how much free resign the animators get. They do add a lot of extra ZoRobin moments though. So I guess they ship them too. XD
28/07/2013 at 3:30 am
I only mention it because Oda is really involved in how the anime people put stuff in. And i agree that robin and zoro are REALLY shipped in the anime. Maybe its just your article but i just see shipping moments everywhere now.
01/11/2013 at 5:28 am
That’s really great to hear. I wish Oda threw in a few more ZoroRobin moments lately. We haven’t had as many. :(
24/07/2013 at 7:38 pm
I’m kinda of a lurker in every fandom I follow. Zorobin grew in my heart and bumping on your analysis really moved (there are other Zorobin shippers out there!) I I am more and more conviced of their chemistry and if not canon in the future, at least they have a special relationship no one can deny!
I have questions, could you give me links to good Zorobin fanfics, or to active Zorobin communities? I’d like to see what other shippers come up with :)
01/11/2013 at 5:30 am
Ah, I’m not too involved in other communities. I’m rather busy in real life unfortunately. D: I did happen upon a few translated ZoRobin doujinshi on DeviantArt (if my memory isn’t tricking me). There weren’t that many, but the ones that I saw were really cute!
17/08/2013 at 9:10 am
Thank so much for writing this, I was looking for ZoRobin hints online and you cover it amazingly well.
Definitely think it can happen because it would be very casual, they’re both quiet characters and it wouldn’t mess with the strawhat chemistry. I like the age difference, Zoro looks and acts very mature for his age, he’s not a child, while Robin has lost most of her years on the run, in a relationship she would definitely be looking for youth.
If Oda wants to pull the trigger all he has to do is have Zoro act angrier than usual over Sanji’s fawning and we’re off and running…
01/11/2013 at 5:33 am
Thank you for your kind words. :)
Yes, that is definitely one way it could go. I saw a few doujinshi and the artists are rather creative! I can see the pairing taking off in so many ways now. There was one where Robin was the instigator, which fits because she likes to tease others! I could also see Zoro doing something very tsun to start it off like helping Robin up after a fight while blushing. XD Ok, I’ll stop before I write a novel. XD
28/08/2013 at 9:32 am
Oh my! I’m a huge fan of ZoroBin :D
liked your blog so much! hope to see more of this :)
01/11/2013 at 5:37 am
Thank you. :) Not sure when I’ll get around to doing an update on ZoRobin (rather busy IRL right now), but it’s definitely on my to do list. :)
27/09/2013 at 12:25 am
This is awesome, great job, but you missed the episode where zoro babysits the kids and robin sees him. That’s one of the cutest zorobin moments :D
01/11/2013 at 5:36 am
Not sure if you saw my reply to Tom, but I decided to just do the manga in this analysis as that is the source material. I definitely know which episode you are talking about and I loved it a lot because I always saw just how shippy it was. >w<
07/10/2013 at 4:42 am
OMG… thank you, just thank you. You just made my day ahahhaah I thought I was the only one crazy enough to do an analysis like this, and I really felt like crying while reading, cause… everything is so right. Thank you ahahhahaha
01/11/2013 at 5:27 am
No problem. I’m happy others are enjoying this analysis. :3
27/10/2013 at 9:37 am
In the Enies Lobby arc, when Zoro makes an evil face, it’s due to the fact that he’s itching to fight the CP9 members.
01/11/2013 at 5:25 am
I did say this was an interpretive spin. I never stated that my reading of the manga was the only way it could go. That’s the fun in shipping in my opinion~ :)

03/11/2013 at 9:12 pm
OH MY GOD. I didn’t catch that! Which chapter is that from? Damn, you’re better than me at this! XD Actually, I’ve been suspecting that Oda is trying to be as subtle as possible since he is renown for dropping in Easter Eggs for fans who actually pay attention. He did that with Panda Man, for example. This is pretty much exactly the kinds of hints I expect from him. XD Still, I’m with you. I hope he does eventually show something more concrete for ZoRobin. I don’t really want them to do the usual romance thing and marriage, but just something like a hug at the end or staying together is all I want~
Yeah, I saw that as a subtle hint that Franky/Robin wasn’t going to go anywhere. I didn’t mention it here because I prefer not to bring in rival ships into an analysis because it doesn’t really prove the other ship will happen if the rival ship doesn’t. I did bring in Nami/Zoro a few times in this analysis, but that was because it actually did work to show ZoRobin would happen as Zoro’s relationship with those two contrasts so very nicely. And that’s pretty much the only reason I would ever compare ships. I don’t like to do it because it feels like I am needlessly attacking a ship that has nothing to do with mine. I just want everyone to enjoy shipping as much as me~ :)

Yup I do! I just didn’t put as much Tony/Zoro moments because I didn’t want to bloat my post too much with theories that were even shakier than trying to make a case of ZoRobin based on their own interactions. XD
13/12/2013 at 7:55 pm
i wanna ask a question that robin age is 30 and zoro age is 21!!! is age have value to create shipping???? and what about triangle of robin, franky and zoro??? zoro never explain his feeling, if he have feeling about robin or not and i cannot see robin, she have feeling about zoro…. zoro every time thinking about promise with kuina… is that possible future of zoro x robin???
02/01/2014 at 11:59 am
Age is not a problem or an important .Usually the most successful marriages are when women older the man.zoro does not need to tell robin about his feeling
So i think zoro and robin they don’t understand they Loved each .
They respect each other. Trust each other. Even like each
and a bout zoro his dream he n ever think about his promise to kuina his dream always to be the stronger kuina and he change His dream to help lufy
zoro his goal To be stronger to protect his friends
also robin have her dream Do not have time to think about love but she have Relationship of respect and understanding with zoro Better than any other member Protects each other
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
also about franky robin said It is no longer considered him as a human
like a kiss of Death for those shipping
09/01/2014 at 5:17 pm
thanks for explain but oda don’t want romance/love in strawhat pirates!!!!! So, it means there is no future of Zoro X Robin????
09/01/2014 at 7:36 pm
Well, his answer was unclear. When he was asked if there would be romance in the story, he said they’re in love with the adventure(not sure if that’s the exact question/answer but it was among those lines). So it was neither a ‘no’ nor a ‘yes’.
09/01/2014 at 8:54 pm
maybe but if there romance in the crow will be zoro x robin
nami x sanji
06/02/2014 at 12:56 am
Age really has no effect on shipping (or whether something will be canon or not. There are lots of canon pairs with age gaps, sometimes even really big ones). To me it’s more about the mental age; and mentally, Zoro and Robin seem about on par.
That’s why this is a ship. If Zoro explained his feelings, it would be canon. Same with Robin. A ship is a pairing that you want to happen but that isn’t canon (aka it isn’t known whether the two characters like each other mutually; or if they do, they are not allowed to be together for one reason or another [for example, one character may be dead even though previously they were a couple]). You can also ship characters that are non-canon, but those are usually called crack ships because they have no chance of happening (example: Rukia/Grimmjow). Or if you ship two characters that cannot be canon because one of them is already in a relationship but the other still likes the one in the relationship that is also shipping (example: shipping Rui and Tsukushi from HanaDan. Rui like Tsukushi but Tsukushi/Tsukasa are canon), but again, in the case of ZoRobin, whether they are canon or not is not known. And for me that uncertainty is part of the fun and charm of shipping~
How far along in the One Piece manga are you? Because after a certain point, Zoro pretty much abandons that promise to Kuina in favour of his desire to make Luffy the Pirate King. Just saying.

Hi there! I watched OP like, 7 years ago (anime first) and in my country the only dub till the end of skypie, which was awfull cause of Skypie it set everything into motion! I did only have eyes for those “subtle” moments of Zoro/Robin. Like you said, anime is way much more “daring” than Oda but they get this feeling from somewhere! I haven’t been reading OP lately so, has any more “subtles” happened? I haven’t been reading since 2013’s summer!
06/02/2014 at 1:00 am
Well my post covers all the subtle moments I personally noticed up until the Fishman Island arc, which is just 2 arcs ago from the current arc. It’s pretty up to date. :) I do plan on writing a follow up post with updates as more chapters come out, but I just need to find more time. I started this blog when I was unemployed and now I’m employed full time and it’s hard to find the time. D:
27/01/2014 at 7:48 pm
I,m a big fan of zorobin. Thank you for writing this.remember in fishman island after the battle? Chopper was exhausted and he is lying in Robin’s lap. When Sanji ask Robin to also lay in her lap because he used a daring technique, Zoro reacted and told Sanji to put his head somewhere else..
06/02/2014 at 1:02 am
Yup, that’s up there too! Although the way it was worded and placed in the manga makes it kind of ambiguous. Was Zoro yelling at Chopper or Sanji? Does the anime clear that up?
05/02/2014 at 7:55 am
Woah, thanks for this! ZoRobin is my favorite pairing in One Piece as well, and I’m glad someone made a page including many of the scenes (I could never find them all, haha). Now I can give the link of this page to my friends and make them ship Zoro x Robin too (mwahaha).
06/02/2014 at 1:02 am
This is why I made it! CONVERT EVERYONE TO THIS SHIP!!!! MWHAHAHAHA. >:3 XD
09/03/2014 at 8:45 pm
Thank you for your post, which is, I think, very relevant and true. Actually, I used to think when Franky appeared that perhaps he could steal Robin’s heart from Zoro, but now i’m not so sure of that and I think there is a real prospect that Zoro and Robin may end up together (maybe in a tacit way). By the way, maybe I’ve got something for you : actually, I’m a french guy, and in the french version of OP, Jaguar D.Saul becomes Haguar D.Sauro. I find it quite uncanny that Robin’s saviour and the man we suspect her to love almost have the same name (in japanese it’s pronounced Haguwāru D Sauro, I don’t know why it was translated so in english). Maybe it’s sheer coincidence and I wouldn’t like to mislead you, but maybe it isn’t ^^
Waiting for another post like that :) !
14/03/2014 at 6:22 pm
Huh, that is a pretty interesting coincidence! Not sure why it was localized as Jaguar either. Only explanation I can think of is that the localization/translation team at Viz thought “Haguar” was suppose to be a Spanish surname and changed it to Jaguar to keep the same pronunciation since the letter ‘J’ is pronounced with an ‘h’ sound in Spanish. Anyway, thanks for reading my post. :) I’ll try to make another one. I’m just not sure when it will be since I’m rather busy IRL now. ; w ;
02/05/2014 at 7:01 pm
I’ve read the entire post… and it was so awesome! Thank you so much for offering your time to collect all the informations in one great post. It makes so much sense to me what you wrote… and deep inside I feel, they just belong together. Even Oda must think that way…
Once again, thanks for your effort! It was more than worth it :-)
best wishes from germany
04/05/2014 at 4:14 pm
Thank you. I’m happy my post is so well liked. Seeing others enjoying it definitely makes it worth the effort. :D I really do hope Oda puts them together. Nothing extravagant, but a hug would be nice. >w<
11/05/2014 at 2:39 am
Hi soaringwings!!!! I thought i was the only one crazy about ZoRobin… Thanks for this wonderful post! I really love it! Oh by the way if you watch the anime of OP, most of the time Zoro and Robin is always next to each other <3333 Everytime I see them together I flipped out hahahaha!!! And also look what i've got file:///C:/Users/dijikards/Pictures/Anime/968full-one-piece–strong-world-screenshot.jpg I hope it'll make you happy! Thanks a lot for this post :DDD

One piece chapter 746 Zoro call Robin :DD
09/06/2014 at 5:03 pm
As I wrote a month ago, you did a great job! :-) I often come back here to read some things of the post again.
Well, one question…will you keep this “bible” as I’m gonna call it now, updated? ~ Like what is happening in the anime and manga to get out new scenes and/or moments to interprete them and share your point of view with us? :-)
Once again…best wishes from germany and have a great week!
14/07/2015 at 4:55 pm
If I do ever get a chance to update, it will be a new post, but I’ll definitely link back to this one. :>
11/07/2014 at 10:24 am
what do you think of the relationship zoro and nami because I read things about these two that have confused my mind… ):
In addition, in an interview with a French correspondent, Oda said it is too formal for a couple, but if the idea should be realized, it would be zoro / robin, zoro / nami luffy gold / hancock.
11/07/2014 at 10:48 am
Really? Oda said that? Can you mention any links about those conversations? Because if oda really said like that, then it’s seems like he give us (zorobin) a green light that oda might be agree with us about this shipping as well. *cheers for this good news*
For zoro and nami, for my personal view, i think they still had a chance to be canon. But it will turn become a love-comedy story (with everyday fighting and arguing each other), which i dont really like it. And, as for me zoro n robin has a lot of chemistry and romantic-mature relationship rather than zoro x nami.
Robin suits with zoro very well and she could support him more better than nami. :)
The only man who can bear with selfishbutcute nami is sanji i guess. :)
And for luffy. Hancock is the most capable lady for the king of pirate. :)

hey sis i hope you are ok .. ther are many zoro robin moment in this arc
17/03/2015 at 4:46 am
oh my God.
wow
I liked this pairing, I really do, I used to try not to like it because of the lack of evidence and the age gap, but then you, wow, so much observational skills here XD *slow clap*
yes yes they have a good chemistry, frankly I think they’d make a mature cool yet hot couple. Tashigi x Zoro pairings are so shoujo-ey and childish and gah.
anyways thanks for make me more obsessed *sigh*
17/04/2015 at 10:40 am
Well sorawings…I wonder if you are okay? Don’t you have time anymore to keep this blog updated? :-(
I enjoyed reading it over and over again!
Have a great time, hope you are okay!
Would love to read something new every now and then :)

I like ZoRo a lot, but to be fair, the manga scan about Zoro’s reaction to Nami’s betrayal is mistranslated. I don’t want to base my shipping on lies…
Here’s the link to the real scan :
http://www.mangapanda.com/103-2144-1/one-piece/chapter-70.html
Zoro doesn’t want to cut Nami to pieces (thank god), he wants to cut his way in to get to Nami (you can even watch the Anime to see it). When he learns that Nami is with Arlong, he is clearly shocked:
http://www.mangareader.net/103-2145-7/one-piece/chapter-71.html
But even after all this, he doesn’t believe she betrayed them, and is willing to bet his life on it without knowing her past:
http://www.mangareader.net/103-2145-10/one-piece/chapter-71.html
Now if he really didn’t trust her, would he risk his life, his promise to Kuina and his dream, all this for someone he considers an enemy?
Of course not.
PS: I’m sorry about my English it is not my first language.
15/07/2015 at 2:29 am
This is true, but so what?Of course he cares for Nami (as little sis) but don’t forget the will of captain…zoro is royal dog in his captain. After she joined for real,he said “she’s gonna betray us again?”. For Robin’s betrayal, zoro has very different reaction.I don’t say he loved her as woman back then…but it was good base for them as couple.Really, when zoro did analysis for women, especially in betrayal? He was the one who gave more reasons to Luffy for try to bring her back. And the scene in room? zoro told little words but it had big meaning. And for his promise and kuina… for Luffy in TB he could die,and left these things… In Nami’s case did the same for Luffy’s will.
08/05/2015 at 7:51 am
I think you guys are disappointed because the scenes or marks between those two have happened low, and there are much interactions with another characters, but remember these when franky was introduced many people shipping him with robin, later shipping her with dragon, law, now cavvendish, but don’ t forget that zoro/robin ship have bases from jaya arc and it dosen’ t finished, as above, instead in the future arcs it will have great development . Same for the pairings with perona,tashigi,bonney,.. these characters are auxiliary not main characters, it can’ t be done such kind relationship with them, it don’t have logic, one piece have some logic.
11/05/2015 at 4:38 pm
i agree with the much of your comments, and i foresee that in the future arcs will have big and important moment(s). But i have question for your blog : you believe anyone that after punk hazzard ( and everyone understand about who part of this arc i talk) the moments between them are too low, and interactions with secondary characters are more warm, like law, cabbage, even barto?
01/06/2015 at 7:30 pm
Oh i think you forgot something I don’t think its a canon the scene is kaku fighting zoro and kaku said ” I kaku in the name of justice will execute you like that woman” and then suddenly zoro became a demon and finish him off with a new technique. and also the part where zoro babysitting a three baby, its episode 317 or 318 that he badly wants to avoid his crew members and the galley la foreman and also the frank family and suddenly robin pops out from somewhere and tease zoro that babysitting suits him well that he wont tell anyone abt it. Hahaha ZoRobin SHippper here.
03/06/2015 at 1:17 pm
i hope you are fine sis ..
04/06/2015 at 7:18 am
i don’t know if you ship that anymore, but your job is excellent and you have thousand of fans out there. We watched the current moments of this couple, but we wait your analysis, i think you are preparing something big…
22/07/2015 at 10:26 pm
Hello my name is ken, I am a ZoRo shipper from Vietnam. I really love your analysis… I try to find more moments about them and yeah I find out your blog 😁 I really thanks for it 😍😍😍 hmm can I translate your article to Vietnamese or in some parts. Of course I will link to this website and give you credit. If you don’t mind please give me permission to translate this 🙏🏻
23/07/2015 at 12:49 am
Go for it. :D I honestly don’t mind if people wish to translate my stuff. :)
23/07/2015 at 12:52 am
Thank you for give me the permission to translate this article 😭😭😭😘
21/08/2015 at 11:33 am
Oh Sorawings answered one of kenbaby13 questions!
Does that mean you are back Sora? :-O
So is there a slight chance you will continue here? – although I find within the last year or so, there wasn’t happening one could write about between Zorobin.
What do you think?
best wishes :)
21/08/2015 at 11:49 am
Yeah I hope Sora could write more analysis about ZoRobin👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
02/09/2015 at 10:18 pm
I don’t know how permanently I am back (on medical leave), BUT I have started actually writing my next Zoro/Robin post. I’m gonna try to do smaller ones so that the updates don’t take too long. :> As compensation, I will try to be as in-dept as possible since I’ll only be tackling an arc or so at a time.
03/09/2015 at 5:45 am
I’ll be very happy to see your next post.
However can i ask you for something? In FI arc in one chapter Zoro told about Robin “one creepy lady”. This phrase used from other shippers, especially frobin and zotash, that zoro really dislike Robin’s character…I don’t think in this way, but i don’t have answer what kind thought he had about her in this time…but not he dislikes her, maybe something else.what do you think?
04/09/2015 at 12:59 am
Do you have a rough idea what chapter/when that happened? I don’t mind checking it out, but I don’t want to scan the whole FI arc for it. ^^;; I honestly don’t remember this at all. Maybe it’s also a particular translation? I usually use mangastream for fan translation since I like being up-to-date with chapters.
04/09/2015 at 5:20 am
I don’t if it’s just the translation and the japanese version just uses the same term but I think that it’s cute that Zoro went from “Woman” to “Lady” when he refers to Robin :))
04/09/2015 at 7:59 am
The chap was 614,when Zoro told with fukaboshi.I agree with that said anelalala,i think it’s the only time who zoro called “lady”,but you can give more proof about that?
05/09/2015 at 7:06 pm
Okay, found that it. XD It’s not the translation. If someone is making a claim Zoro hates/dislikes Robin because he’s calling her a “creepy lady” here, well then he must hate/dislike Chopper too because Chopper hates being called a tanuki and that’s what Zoro calls him. I personally see this scene as Zoro being endearing in a ‘tsundere-like’ way almost. See he cares deeply for Sanji, but he can’t come out and show it. Instead he teases the guy relentlessly. That’s what I see happening here. Zoro is being especially affectionate by giving these weird descriptions of his crew mates. Also he mentions Robin first, coincidence? I THINK NOT! XD She’s obviously the first person that comes to mind for him~ ;D
I mean, Zoro has always been like this. He pretends he doesn’t care. He pretended he didn’t care when Nami and Robin both betrayed the crew. But his actions later both showed that (a) he did still trust Nami; and (b) he was shaken by Robin’s betrayal. Same with the thing someone brought up where Zoro mentions something along the lines of leaving without Robin back on Skypeia. He rarely means these things. He just has this almost tsundere-type personality where he pretends he’s all tough and stuff doesn’t bother him.
I think the woman to lady thing is a translation thing though. I’m pretty certain Zoro still calls Robin “onna” in the anime, (now that I have the context for the scene) which can be translated as woman or lady.
Hope that helps~
06/09/2015 at 2:24 am
Thank you very much!your analysis are always oasis in shipping chaos. About EL all members when won their enemies, thought Robin, except Zoro. But Zoro was the only one who use power similar to Robin. This show how deeply he think about Robin…i like the addition from anime, but i think Oda gave much better hint when drew him as the ONE who didn’t think, but made that anyone else could make.
23/08/2015 at 7:01 am
i don’t know if anyone noticed that, but look this spread:
http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/507/2
Zoro’s scarf has the same color with Robin’s panties. It seems, the scarf is her own,and she gave it to him for kept his swords. In many spreads, seems Robin has some effect with Zoro’s swords.
If anyone think the scarf is from Nami, i have to tell Wrong. The pink scarf already fits to Robin’s attire.
I always think the cover pages have something more for zorobin :)
30/08/2015 at 2:42 pm
This is really good!
I love it ^^
Please do more!
27/09/2015 at 2:26 pm
I thought something about the incident “she is a woman”, and why this show how deeply is zorobin. Remember Zoro said in Kuina, the gender doesn’t matter, and she was stronger than him,and the next day she was dead because fell from stairs. In Skypie incident he watched Robin as a strong ally, but when she was hit from Enel, she went to fell in ground. Zoro watched that and he remembered Kuina’s death, and run to catch her, because ,without to release it, he didn’t want to lose Robin. She isn’t only “one woman”, and he don’t think her as a “weak woman”, she is “a very important woman” for him, and because Oda foreshadowing… the incident is important and not random. Excuse me, if that already shared, and i repeat, but i think this explain why “she is a woman” isn’t a bad translation, and it’s really moment for couple.
08/10/2015 at 12:41 pm
Hello soaring wings, I’v just finished reading your post an I would like to say good job at it. And also there are a lot of other people against Zorobin now and days witch as I find it pretty sad. Most people are saying Zoro never trusted Robin at all only after Enies Lobby. And a anther thing Zoro was sort of off during the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arc and yes he was shaked up to .
07/03/2016 at 8:07 am
You know friend ? That’s the hilarious thing about them !
As they said *I assume they’re Frobin or Zotashigi fans* -_-
YES Zoro didn’t trust her at the begining YET he saved her couple of times *I think* before enies lobby !! with Aokiji and in skypea.
Why should he save her if he doesn’t trust her deep in his heart ???
Beggist moment was in Skypea, when Robin got struck by enel there was really no need for him to be angry as he was nor to catch her despite that it does really matter him , am I right ?
It’s pretty obvious but what to do with these haters ? , just ignore them <.<
20/10/2015 at 1:36 pm
zorobin pair is the most indredible in one piece because zoro and robin both show little feeling for each other
11/11/2015 at 12:18 am
Oh my…! i liked your analysis. There are some details that this couple can be canon :3 I’m a ZoRobin Fan 4ever :3 I like it a lot. I hope that this couple be real.

Miss soaringwing .. hope you’re fine ,
A few weeks ago I read your theory about Zoro and Robin. I spent the night reading it and it was worthy honestly.
I really really like it from first word to last one ! X’D
It was fantastic, realistic, well-written and perfectly organized ..
*BTW your way of writing indicates that you can be an excellent teacher ’cause you’re capable of delvering the information easily :)
One more thing, I think the same as you in term of shipping :P I don’t take it sireously but just for fun. And it’s been a while since your post about this wonderfull couple and many things happend after :”
So would you please post another nice theory ?T_T
And if you do, please this time cmpare between Frobin couple (who I hate the most) and our cute Zorobin couple :”> ..
I’m looking forward to it.
Thank you very much .. <3

Skypeia is deffinitely the arc where the ship sparks, you only highlighted the most important moments, but the arc is Full of their interactions, i was rereading it and i was actually surprised by it, they talk to each other a lot, share some opinions, stay close to each other, i mean Oda divided the Group 3 times in the arc and in all those 3 times, Zoro and Robin were at the same group
some times i wonder that Oda noticed the possible ambiguousness, and purposely slowed down the hints after skypeia… i kinda miss their interactions
but anyway great review, i would include some other moments from skypeia though, like this one for ex http://www.mangareader.net/one-piece/239/8

i’m not really a shipper on One piece, but i kinda like the idea of this two together
Skypeia was definitely where the ship sparks, i was rereading the arc, and was actually impressed by how many interactions they have, you obviously highlighted the most important ones, but they talk to each other a lot in this arc, and they are always close to each other, i mean, Oda divided the group 3 times and Zoro and Robin were always at the same group
sometimes i wonder if Oda noticed the possible ambiguousness and slowed down the hints on purpose, cause i miss their interactions…
but anyway great review, you analised the most important moments, the only one i would highlight as well would be this one

can you do an analysis to the recent arc?? like in dressrosa?? I like the concept of the two dwarves (Leo and Wicca) appearing in the chest of Zoro and Robin :D
28/05/2016 at 11:44 am
wow this is amazing thank you!! I ship Zoro and Robin so much!!! they are so cyte . i really hope that Oda-sensei will have them as a pair in the future. and also I have noticed while wtaching the anime that in intro-songs they are always together or they look at each other. i really hope that one day it will become CANON!!!!!!!!!!
29/05/2016 at 3:09 pm
Hi I really like your moment Miss Soaringwing!!!!
About ZoRobin there are at less 2 big arc (no one of the other straw-hat has shared so many moment like this 2) I am talking about Sky Pea and Punk Hazard. I have counted the number of chapter that they were put together well they were together well for Punk Hazard 31 chapter for a total of 43 chapter. This is amazing guys!!! For Sky Pea the same! During Devil Back Fight, I find again a strange coincidence that the Nami and Robin were show during the match of Sanji and Zoro. Water 7 has definitely a lot more sneaky moment, just watch the cover page for the small Robin past arc (there are 2 cover with the title Demon, and Zoro has the main stream in that cover!!! During the Dressrosa Arc there were again good moment, but also amazing cover page!! And Zou guys, Oda draw the last picture for this 2 near each other, is a coincidence? I don’t think so!!!! Please go visit Oro Jackson forum there is a very recent Fan club for ZoRobin with new moment!!!
Here is the link: http://orojackson.com/threads/zoro-x-robin-z-o-r-o-b-i-n.27312/
My English is very basic but I hope you enjoy the moment that I found!!!
29/05/2016 at 3:59 pm
At @Miss soaringwing could you please look the cover page 107!!!! I see Robin foreshadowed in that cover. I see also what/who Zoro likes in One Piece! Chapter 97, 152 and chapter 186. In all this chapter I see Robin foreshadowed and there is a strange bond with Zoro too!!!
12/06/2016 at 7:54 am
Hi miss sorewing can I heard your opinion about the Zou arc (I think there is a clear intent to put aside Zoro during this arc, he is the straw-hat with less screen time). In the other side Robin was used a lot during this arc and well she was most of the time with Franky (I ship ZoRobin but here I think they prefer to give more screen to this 2 just to create more confusion inside the fan). I think that Oda choose that because in Wano the main screen is on Zoro side and that mean also more moment between ZoRobin what do you think? (there are a lot cover page that foreshadowed Zoro importance for Wano arc)
28/04/2017 at 10:12 pm
Hello! Thank you so much for this article!! This subject is pretty old now, but I just finished reading it and it was awesomely interesting! From then a lot of One Piece Chapterswere published, I would be very interested to read a new article about what you think of this shipping right now? With the Dressrosa, Zou arcs! If you ever read this comment, and take on the suggestion, don’t hesitate to contact me :D
03/09/2017 at 12:45 am
Oh i love them >w<
Since Robin got into the gang I did smell something with them hehe. And after that I keep stanning them together xD before the timeskip there were actually more moments than theseday :<
Nami is actually shining in these chapters and I'm really waiting for Robin's time :3
25/02/2018 at 10:22 pm
I am a little too late but I really enjoyed this theory. I liked how you brought up those moments but you are aware that it’s a shaky ship and you don’t exaggerate . My favourite one was the cover of Robin with the ducklins because it seems intentional and at the same time easy to miss.
Thank you for explaining what’s great about shipping, I always try to, but I just can’t put it into words, it’s great how it makes shows more enjoyable. Again, awesome review!
ps. I wish you were right about Rukia and Ichigo, I was absolutely sure they would end up together. It bothered me so much that he ended up with Innue that I didn’t feel like watching the anime anymore :(
22/05/2021 at 9:04 am
In the anime, they have an episode after Enie’s Lobby where Zoro is drafted to be “aniki” for a family, and is holding about three children draped around him. He tries to run, but keeps bumping into his nakama (who don’t see him yet), and tries to hide for fear of embarrassment. Who actually notices this? Robin. She tells him that she won’t tell the others, and how it’s a good look (implying that she thinks he’d be a good father).
